Maison Cala Rosé bottle on Mediterranean rocks

Our Terroir — The Origin of Maison Cala Rosé

A French Grenache rosé from the vineyards of Southern France, near Carcassonne, where a Mediterranean climate meets Atlantic freshness.

Origin

A Vineyard Near Carcassonne

Maison Cala Rosé is made in Southern France, in the Languedoc, in partnership with Domaine de la Périnade at Pezens, near the medieval city of Carcassonne.

Our world is inspired by the Mediterranean coast and its art of living, but our wine is not from the French Riviera, and it is not a Provence wine. It is a French Grenache rosé, shaped by the land and climate of the Languedoc. Read our Languedoc rosé guide.

The estate

Domaine de la Périnade — Since 1830

The estate's history dates back to around 1830, when Hippolyte Arnal founded this family wine property between the Canal du Midi and the Fresquel.

In 2019 the sixth and seventh generations of the Arnal family took over winemaking together, and the estate opened its own cellar the following year.

Terroir

What Makes a Wine Terroir?

Terroir is the French word for everything a place gives to a wine: its soils, its climate, the shape of the land and the know-how of the people who farm it.

The same grape grown in two places can give two very different wines. That is why we explain where Maison Cala Rosé comes from, and what is specific to the estate versus our own Grenache parcels.

Soils

Clay-Limestone, Gravel and Vineyard Diversity

Domaine de la Périnade describes a range of soils across its vineyard. These describe the whole estate, which also grows other varieties, so they do not all apply to the grapes in Maison Cala Rosé.

Clay-limestone

Estate-wide. Clay holds water through dry summers, while limestone supports freshness and structure.

Gravelly soils

Estate-wide. Well-drained and warm, these soils help vines ripen evenly.

Sandy soils

Maison Cala Rosé parcels. The Grenache for our rosé is described as grown on sandy hillsides, which drain well and favour finesse.

These are separate parcel descriptions, not one plot with all three soils.

Climate

Where Mediterranean and Atlantic Influences Meet

Mediterranean influence

Sunny, dry summers and mild winters bring grapes to full, even ripeness.

Atlantic influence

West of Carcassonne, ocean air tempers the Mediterranean heat. This makes it one of the cooler areas of the Languedoc, which helps keep freshness in the grapes.

Seasonal variation

The vines bud in spring, the fruit ripens over summer and the grapes are picked at the end of the season. For our rosé, picking happens at night to keep the fruit cool.

Grape

Grenache — At the Heart of Maison Cala Rosé

Grenache loves sun and warmth and copes well with dry summers. In a cooler, breezy area like this one, it can give a pale, delicate and fresh rosé.

Vineyard

Vineyard Management at Domaine de la Périnade

Ground-cover management

Many Southern French vineyards manage grass and cover plants between the rows to protect the soil and support biodiversity. We will only describe the estate's own practices once the estate has confirmed them.

Mechanical soil management

Working the soil mechanically is a common alternative to chemical weeding in the region. This is a general description, not a claim about specific parcels.

Environmental certification

Domaine de la Périnade obtained HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification in 2022. This certification belongs to the estate. Maison Cala as a brand does not claim its own certification. What HVE certification means.

Winemaking

From Grenache Grapes to Maison Cala Rosé

Once picked, the Grenache goes to the cellar, where the winemaking turns the character of the vineyard into a pale, fresh rosé.
